Our Programs
We want your child leaving class feeling like they got the attention of a private lesson with the supportive environment of a group. We believe group learning with attention to detail is the best way for kids to have fun and improve fast. Too many camps and kids clinics are taught with 'cookie cutter' methods and are a result of having large numbers of kids on court with less experienced coaches. We are a boutique clinic run by experienced and passionate coaches, on beautiful, state-of-the-art college tennis courts.
This summer, we will be offering two different clinics. Red Ball (ages 4-6) and Yellow Ball (ages 7-12) are separated by age and are designed to teach the fundamentals of tennis. At this stage of a young tennis player's life, the priority is developing solid technical foundations that can be built upon.
UPDATE: we just offered our Elite Aces High Performance group, which will meet from 2-3 pm between Sunday, July 13th-Sunday, August 17th!
Red Ball (ages 4-6)
Red Ball introduces kids to tennis using larger, pressure-less balls and fun games that build hand-eye coordination, footwork, and basic strokes. This class is a great way to start your child’s tennis journey in a positive, playful environment. Our goal is for your child to associate tennis with FUN and to introduce improved motor control and hand-eye coordination that tennis requires. Most importantly, your child should leave wanting to play more tennis!
Skills We Learn In Red Ball
- Develop technique on ground-strokes and volleys.
- Introduced to coaching cues (follow-through, low-to-high swing path, get the racket back early, etc).
- Track the ball, make contact consistently, and recover to ready position.
- Introduction to throwing biomechanics/serving.
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship, focus, and listening skills in group settings.
- Understand basic rules, court boundaries, and scoring in simple games.
- After 1-2 years: Rally with a partner using short swings and proper technique.
In Hoboken Aces yellow ball, we will use regular tennis balls and a full-size court. Our goal is for your child to learn the correct grips, learn proper technique on ground-strokes and volleys, and introduce the serve. Depending on experience and performance, we will introduce tactics and the mental side of tennis. Expect a mix of learning, movement, and point play.
Skills We Learn In Yellow Ball
- Basic topspin and under-spin (feel for spin on ground-strokes).
- Consistent forehand and backhand ground-strokes with proper grip and swing path.
- Serve with proper technique.
- Learning to compete, dealing with pressure, and being resilient.
- Positive attitude and sportsmanship, mental preparation (breathing, journaling, etc).
- After 1-2 years: Rallying 8-10 balls in a row with a partner from baseline. Playing points tactically with serve and returns. Directional control (can hit cross-court and down-the-line). Consistent and reliable serve.
